Land Quality

The quality of land and land usde is an important determinant of environmental health which has effects on the individual health of people living in both rural and urban areas.

In rural areas, land quality can be affected by the use of pesticides and other agrochemicals which in turn have health impacts on people who come into contact with them. Overuse of land for agricultural production can also cause soil degradation with negative environmental consequences.

In urban areas, land is used in a number of ways including the construction of homes and office buildings, commercial areas, roads and highways, and waste management sites and infrastructure. The quality of land use has a sizeable impact on the health of the environment and the health of residents. In many urban centers, the poorest residents live closes to poor quality land sites such as garbage dumps and waste management plants.

For example, living in areas without proper solid and liquid waste management systems can lead to adverse health outcomes for both adults and children. Similarly, living in densely built environments without green spaces can affect both the physical and mental health of residents.

It is important to advocate for better and more equitable use of land resources to ensure that the effects of development on an area's environmental health are minimized.
