Sexual and reproductive health refers to the physical, but also the mental and social well-being of individuals relating to gender, sex and the reproductive system, its functions, and processes.

To maintain sexual and reproductive health, people need access to accurate health information, as well as safe, effective, and affordable contraception methods.People should also be informed and empowered to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which include HIV and other infections. Over 1 million STIs are acquired every day worldwide.

Pregnant women should also be able to access services that can help them have a safe pregnancy, delivery, and baby. Although maternal mortality has improved significantly worldwide, it remains unacceptably high with over 800 women dying every day in 2017 from pregnancy-related complications. Importantly, adolescents or young adults face a higher risk of complications during pregnancy.

Not everyone has the same sexual and reproductive health needs. Sexual and gender minorities such as LGBTI individuals face both social stigmatization and barriers in accessing health care.

The involvement of young people in advocating for better sexual and reproductive health and rights for all is crucial because they are the most affected by policies that facilitate or prevent access to reliable information and youth friendly care.
